Microsoft 365 Copilot is the paid AI add-on for Microsoft 365: it drafts Word and PowerPoint content, summarises Teams meetings with tasks and analyses Excel data — based on your own permitted content from SharePoint, Teams and email. The free Microsoft Copilot chat is a different thing: it does not work on your company data.
Copilot does not bypass permissions — it shows each user what they already have access to. Permissions clean-up and governance with Microsoft Purview therefore belong in the plan before go-live; results still need human review. With Agent Builder, business users additionally build knowledge and Q&A agents directly in Copilot — included in the Copilot licence.
